Shows are intended to evaluate breeding stock.  The dog's conformation (overall appearance and structure) is judged while the breed's purpose should be kept in mind at all times.

In Australia, dog breeds are divided into seven different groups, Toys, Terriers, Gundogs, Hounds, Working, Utility and Non-Sporting.

Only breeds which are recognised by the Australian National Kennel Council can be exhibited even though there are many more breeds recognised in other countries.

There are different types of shows
  • All-breed Shows which offer competitions for all dog breeds recognised by the ANKC.
  • Specialty Shows which are restricted to dogs of a specific breed
  • Group Shows or Feature Shows - such as a Gundog Show (Group 3) or a Scottish Breeds Show
To show your dog it must be a 'pure bred' with full registration and you must be a member of DOGS Victoria or another State's equivalent.  Further information can be found at http://www.vca.org.au/index.asp   Your dog's breeder may also help you with show information.
